Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas
The archaeological complex of Machu Picchu is the most important tourist attraction in Peru. It is located 120 km from the city of Cusco, in the Urubamba valley. Since the world knew about it in 1911, thanks to American explorer Hiram Bingham, this Inca city has been the subject of various theories for the perfection achieved in its construction. However, it is known that the Incas built the city in this place of difficult access to avoid the attack of enemies, among other reasons.
More than a city, Machu Picchu is an architectural complex that only lacks the roofs. It is called a city because of the large number of houses, more than 200, which could have been more in the past. Machu Picchu was the most important Inca center of worship and astronomical observation. It has two large areas: to the south, the agricultural area, made up of andenes, aqueducts, etc.; and to the north, the urban zone, which is properly the city, with temples, observatories, workshops and sacred tombs. Machu Picchu, beyond the myths, is the greatest proof of the wisdom and the creativity of the Incas. It is a fantastic city that fascinates visitors who surrender to its enigmatic beauty.
Machu Picchu, a Quechua word that means “Old Mountain”, is universally known, both for its amazing architecture and for its incredible location on the edge of an abyss at the bottom of which the mighty waters of the Urubamba River flow.
